Production Details 2002 was a year of nearly ideal weather conditions for the vines: virtually no frost and no hail, a warm, sunny summer with suitably cool nights that was barely interrupted by some light showers at the beginning of September. Because of very low water reserves in the soil, a significant number of grapes began to lose weight by drying up, a very unusual phenomenon in our latitudes. Picking started on 12th September under sunny skies, resulting in musts with an average of almost 11 degrees potential alcohol and an acidity of slightly over 7g/l: a balance close to that achieved in the legendary 1976 vintage. After fermentation in casks, we did not rack the wines and this allowed us to carry out weekly bâtonnage for three months. Thereafter, we took advantage of the last cold days of winter to clarify the wines naturally. Right from the start, our tasting of the Vin Clair demonstrated their wondrous structure and ripeness. The tasting that followed confirmed our first impressions and at the beginning of June, we decided to use for the assemblage Chardonnays from Avize (50%) and Chouilly (–%) and Pinots Noirs from Dizy (35%), Ay (15%) and Mareuil/Ay (–%).

Production Details In a wine region as far north as Champagne, viticulture can sometimes prove to be a delicate process, as inclement weather conditions can complicate the ripening process. On the other hand, when the weather is good, the vineyard manager can be rewarded by wines of incomparable quality. It is this very accentuated vintage character that sets northerly viticulture apart. Only in an exceptional year does Jacquesson create an assemblage from some of its best casks of Grand Cru wines, to which we sometimes add the best parcels of Dizy, a Premier Cru, to create a vintage wine aiming to give full expression to the unique, outstanding character of the year in question. 2000 was notable for a very high average temperature, the highest since 1956. The winter was mild and dry with no snow. In spring there were no morning frosts that might damage the vines but several hailstorms. Flowering took place under a hot June sun but in July conditions worsened: cold weather, constant rain (21 days) and hailstorms. August was hotter but still rainy with persistent hail. Many vines turned yellow, there was a high presence of mildew and the danger of grey rot. At the end of August the weather improved and remained good throughout September. This allowed the region to bring in a harvest of quite substantial size picked in sunny conditions. Thanks to the House's meticulous viticultural practices, which focus on producing a moderate quantity of bunches that are well ventilated, our grapes were able to ripen in optimal conditions and picking began on 18th September. The quality of the crop was very high and the musts measured around 10 degrees of potential alcohol combined with a tartaric acid content of around 7.5 g/l. Our first tastings of the vins clairs vinified in casks showed a high standard of quality throughout the regions and the grape varieties. The wines were racked promptly to retain the fine lees and followed by several months of weekly batonnage. There after, we took advantage of the first cold days of winter to clarify the wines naturally. The chardonnay tasted combined with fine expressions and at the beginning of June we decided to produce an assemblage composed of the Chardonnays from Avize Champ Cain (50%), a selection of Pinots Noirs from Verzenay (30%) and Dizy (20%) and the Pinots Noirs from Ay Vauzelle Terme (10%).

Production Details The 1997 vintage was characterized by difficult weather patterns. Very cold conditions at the beginning of winter destroyed many buds, but the end of the season was very mild, allowing vegetation to grow earlier than usual. Later, spring frosts damaged almost one quarter of the vineyards and flowering took place during a very cool period, which was also three times wetter than usual. August was punctuated by violent hailstorms and there were also severe attacks of mildew. Fortunately, a dry, sunny September with very cool nights saved the vintage. Harvesting began on September 18th. Starting at the end of November, the first tastings of the vins clairs vinified in casks already showed a high standard of quality throughout the regions and the grape varieties. The wines were racked promptly in order to retain the fine lees and to allow three months of weekly lees stirring. Thereafter, the last cold days of winter were used to clarify the wines naturally. The tastings that followed confirmed first impressions: full-bodied, rich, and showing a beautiful complexity. At the end of May, the decision was made to use for the assemblage the Pinots Noirs from Ay Vauzelle Terme (28%), a selection of Pinots Noirs from Verzenay (17%), the Chardonnays from Oiry Champ Braux (35%), as well as a selection of Chardonnays from Avize (9%) and Chouilly (11%).

Production Details Harvest must measured 11 degrees potential alcohol and 10 g/L acidity; these are must readings, not finished-wine alcohol or acidity. The vins clairs were vinified in oak foudres, lightly racked so that fine lees remained, stirred on the lees for three months, and naturally clarified using late-winter cold.
