Production Details Winter of 2022 provided sufficient rainfall and cold temperatures for good dormancy. August and September had unusually warm days which pushed budburst forward by about 10 days. Flowering conditions were favourable and a decent crop, similar in size to 2022, was set. Due to slightly drier soils during Spring, less vigorous canopies allowed for good sun and wind penetration. In December, 102mm of rain supplemented soil water contents nicely. The onset of veraison was slightly earlier as a result of the earlier onset of the season and available soil water assisted its early completion. January and the first half of February were cooler compared to 2022, yet harvest started very early on 30 January with some young plantings of Chardonnay. From early February, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blocks quickly came into ripeness. Late February brought about a sudden drop in temperatures and also frequent rain. Luckily, most of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes were already in the winery by this time. March saw a further drop in daytime temperatures and 160mm of rain, which quickly turned the vintage into a very tricky one indeed for the unharvested vineyards all over the Cape. Focus was on the earlier ripening varietals which were in excellent condition once again. Gentle winemaking and consistent approach to French Oak maturation allows one to truly experience wine grown in a very special place.

Production Details Winter of 2021 was slightly colder and wetter than both the winters of 2019 and 2020. The wet and cool soils delayed budburst slightly but the vines budded very evenly. Spring of 2021 was slightly drier than normal and there was no significant wind during flowering. These conditions resulted in a good crop set for the first time in 3 years with limited millerandage. The ripening phase from January to March was on average 1 degree Celsius warmer than the long term average, and a highly unusual heat wave occurred at the end of January that lasted 2 days. Some better drained sites experienced heat and drought stress, which is unusual in Elgin. Clay-rich shale soils helped alleviate the impacts of this warmer vintage, allowing for optimal ripeness at lower sugars with good natural acidity. Harvest 2022 started on 7 February with a new Chardonnay block, Dijon clone 76, added to the arsenal, with Pinot Noirs following closely behind. This vintage produced very expressive, aromatic, and textured wines balanced with typical Elgin freshness and acidity. Made from a selection of vineyards high up along the Groenlandberg, this wine truly represents the vintage and its terroir. Gentle winemaking and consistent approach to French Oak maturation allows for a true experience of wine grown in a very special place.

Production Details The winter of 2020 gave us good rains spread evenly over the months of June to September. Late winter rains during September combined with very cold temperatures delayed budburst and the season got off to a slightly delayed start. Budburst was a little uneven as a result of these cold and wet conditions but once the vines broke out their winter rest, the growth caught up. A difficult flowering period of high winds with rain unfortunately reduced the crop load of our Chardonnay especially. The late Spring and early Summer brought warmer temperatures finally but with frequent light rains and plenty of typical cloud cover. Mid Summer temperatures were cool resulting in a very gradual rise in sugar levels and plenty of time to develop beautiful depth of flavour. The smaller yields also contributed to incredible concentration and palate weight. The resulting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines have a great balance of concentration, great acid levels, complexity and depth of flavour. Harvest 2021 started on 12 February with a new and exciting Chardonnay block that have added one more clone to our arsenal, Dijon clone 96 with the Pinot Noirs following closely behind. Predominantly clone 548 with some clone 95 and also for the first time, clone 96. The nose is led by freshly picked apricot, lime zest, oyster shell and almond flakes. The palate is concentrated and textured with plenty of crunchy yellow peach and tart grapefruit. The wines ends long and saline, showing a long life ahead.

Production Details The 2020 growing season started earlier than usual after a cold winter with considerable rains. Late Spring brought a significant weather event in the form of a very cold and wet weekend in late October that brought 135mm of rain and some hail. Fortunately, our Chardonnay bunches were done with flowering by then. The summer was mild with cool nights that ensured gradual ripeness and retention of natural acidities. We were able to harvest a small but very healthy and concentrated crop from between 28 January and 5 February - one of the earliest harvests to date. The result was Chardonnay with ripe flavour profiles and beautiful natural acidity balanced with just enough weight and texture. A vintage that is both accessible early on but with the typical Elgin ageing potential. Made from a selection of vineyards found high up along the Groenlandberg is a wine made to truly represent the vintage and the terroir in which it is grown. Gentle winemaking and consistent approach to French Oak Maturation allows one to truly experience wine grown in a very special place.

Production Details The 2019 growing season was typically cool but relatively dry which gave us very healthy grapes with very good concentration of flavour. The summer was mild with cool nights that ensured gradual ripeness and retention of natural acidities. The week leading up to harvest we experienced warmer days and nights which caused a sudden accumulation of sugar in the vineyards. Fortunately we were able to harvest all our blocks in time and the result was a very intense, compact harvest but with resulting wines proudly representing the unique vintage. The result was Chardonnay with ripe flavor profiles at low pH and high acidities and Pinots with ripe and supple tannins but freshness on the finish. A vintage that is both accessible early on but with the typical Elgin ageing potential. Made from a selection of vineyards found high up along the Groenlandberg is a wine made to truly represent the vintage and the terroir in which it is grown.
