Production Details Winter of 2022 provided sufficient rainfall and cold temperatures for good dormancy. August and September had unusually warm days that pushed budburst by about 10 days. Flowering conditions were favourable and a decent crop, similar in size to 2022, was set. Due to slightly drier soils during spring, the canopies were less vigorous, allowing good sun and wind penetration. In December, 102 mm of rain supplemented soil water contents nicely. The onset of veraison was slightly earlier as a result of the earlier onset of the season and the available soil water. January and the first half of February were cooler compared to 2022, and late February brought a sudden drop in temperatures and frequent rain. Most Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes were already in the winery by then. Made from a selection of vineyards found high up along the Groenlandberg, this wine is made to truly represent the vintage and terroir. Gentle winemaking, careful whole bunch inclusion, and a consistent approach to French oak maturation allow one to truly experience a wine grown in a very special place. New French oak complement is 32%.

Production Details The Groenlandberg is an isolated, fynbos-covered, cloud-catching mountain that forms the backdrop of Oak Valley Estate. Winter of 2021 was slightly colder and wetter than both the winters of 2019 and 2020. The wet and cool soils delayed budburst slightly but vine growth was very even. Spring of 2021 was slightly drier than normal and a two-day heat wave at the end of January caused some heat and drought stress on better drained sites, which is unusual in Elgin. The clay-rich shale soils helped to alleviate the impacts of this warm vintage and the vines were able to ripen grapes at lower sugars with good natural acidity. Harvest 2022 started on 7 February with a new Chardonnay block, with the Pinot Noir blocks following closely behind. Made from a selection of vineyards found high up along the Groenlandberg, this wine reflects the vintage and terroir with gentle winemaking and a consistent approach to French oak maturation.

Production Details The 2019 growing season was typically cool but relatively dry which gave us very healthy grapes with very good concentration of flavour. The summer was mild with cool nights that ensured gradual ripeness and retention of natural acidities. The week leading up to harvest we experienced warmer days and nights which caused a sudden accumulation of sugar in the vineyards. Fortunately we were able to harvest all our blocks in time and the result was a very intense, compact harvest but with resulting wines proudly representing the unique vintage. The result was Chardonnay with ripe flavour profiles at low pH and high acidities and Pinots with ripe and supple tannins but freshness on the finish. A vintage that is both accessible early on but with the typical Elgin ageing potential. Made from a selection of vineyards found high up along the Groenlandberg is a wine made to truly represent the vintage and the terroir in which it is grown. Gentle punch downs and consistent approach to French Oak Maturation allows one to truly experience wine grown in a very special place.

Production Details Made from a selection of vineyards found high up along the Groenlandberg, this wine is made to truly represent the vintage and the terroir in which it is grown. Cool, whole-bunch ferments with gentle punch downs and a consistent approach to French oak maturation allow one to truly experience wine grown in a very special place. Even though the 2018 vintage was relatively hot and dry across the Cape, Elgin experienced one of the best vintages in the last few years. The dry conditions gave balanced canopies and more exposed fruit, creating very good concentration and ripe flavours. The clay soils and cold nights of Elgin made sure that the vines did not endure too much stress. The result was Pinot Noir with ripe and supple tannins but freshness on the finish, accessible early on but with typical Elgin ageing potential.
