Production Details The 12.58-ha terraced vineyard comprises 6 ha planted in 1978 and the remainder replanted in 2007, divided into nine parcels; parcels 49, 46 and 45 usually contribute in excellent vintages. Elevation is 470–495 m, planting density is 5,200 vines/ha, training is single Guyot on 8.04 ha and open Lyra on 4.54 ha, and rootstock is 420A. Grapes were harvested manually in 10–12 kg crates and underwent further selection on a sorting table. Sangiovese and Merlot fermented separately with indigenous yeasts at 30–33°C in steel tanks with manual pumpovers; total cuvaison was 26 days for Sangiovese and 25 days for Merlot. After barrique malolactic fermentation, the varieties were assembled and returned to fine-grain oak barriques, 40% new and the remainder one year old; the sheet gives no maturation duration. Finished-wine residual sugar was at most 1 g/L and extract was 31.9 g/L.
Tasting Notes Deep, dark ruby, nearly impenetrable, with purple reflections; red fruit, forest berries, spice, vanilla bean, pipe tobacco and leather; elegant, enveloping and savory, with present but restrained tannin, succulence and a long finish
