Alcohol 15.0%
Grape Varieties Syrah
Region Hermitage
Soil Sediments on a fine layer over a granitic subsoil
Fermentation Vessels Concrete tanks
Pressing Method Only Free-Run Wine Was Used
Production Details Vines were stated as 90–100 years old. Grapes were hand-harvested near over-ripeness, fully destemmed, and given one or two punch-downs daily; fermentation did not exceed 32°C and maceration lasted 4–5 weeks. The producer's technical section says maturation lasted 18–20 months in oak casks with an average 30% new casks and natural clarification, while the embedded Robert Parker review says the 2003 was aged in 100% new barrels; the new-oak proportion is therefore unresolved.
Tasting Notes Deep garnet red with purple highlights; tar, smoke, raspberry, blackberry, walnut and liquorice; powerful, complex and velvety, with a long finish marked by liquorice, tobacco and cocoa
Food Pairing Beef, game and cheeses
