The vineyard is described as somewhat less steep and deeper-soiled than Wehlener Sonnenuhr.
Tasting Notes Valckenberg: apricot, apple, slate, light elegance, orange zest and walnut. Bibendum’s attributed reviews add lilac and spice (JamesSuckling.com); slate, lichen, mint, tansy, creamy ripe peach and orange zest (Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous); and seed, herbs, slate, Riesling aromas and a saline finish (Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate).
Food Pairing White meat and seafood; also positioned as a dessert wine. Bibendum recommends robust savoury food, non-blue cheeses, spicy dishes and red meat, with young examples also suitable for fruit-based desserts or crème caramel; it advises against overly sweet or chocolate-based desserts.
